There is a thought that has always fascinated me:

A caveman looking at lightning might have thought,
"The gods are angry."

A modern scientist explains lightning with electromagnetism.
That feels like tremendous progress.

Yet when we ask:
"Why do the laws of electromagnetism exist at all?"
we may be standing in front of a mystery just as profound as the one the caveman faced.
